Uncovering A House From Its Landscape

A typical foundation landscape is designed to last about 10-15 years. Rarely do homeowners want to install tiny plants that take 5 years to grow into themselves, so we often bring in “teenage” trees, shrubs, and perennials that will provide impact immediately. So, by a decade or so later the plants can take over the house if not properly maintained. My clients were fastidious caretakers of their yard over the 40+ years they had been there, so we were able to keep their original design for four times longer than we would expect! Now after all this time, they were ready for a change. We rescued the home from the too-large trees and bushes, uncovering their house from its very mature landscaping.

Our design partner, Gary Warren from Greensketch Concepts, had met the couple on a bible study retreat in Michigan. They hit it off which led to Gary creating a new design for their yard. What we enjoy most about working with other designers is that they have different tastes, styles, and preferences than we do. They expand our horizons and provide us with some variety, challenge, and inspiration when we install their plans.

One sticking point for the project was two existing pyramidal yews. The wife has loved putting Christmas lights on them for 40 years, but she knew it was time to remove these 10 ft tall overwhelming bushes. I promised to find two 5-6ft bushes for her, so she let the project move ahead.

We began by tearing out the entire foundational landscape and prepping the beds for a crisper look. We installed upgraded plants such as Hydrangeas, some new Hosta varieties with nifty colored leaves, and perennials for seasonal color. We also rearranged the existing boulder work. The design was completed with a natural edge and mulch.

Once we completed the front yard, the clients were so delighted with the new look they had us take on the back yard which they had intended to do at a later date.  We very carefully removed the groundcover that had crept up the wall and dislodged the case for the power feed to the house. The homeowners then called to have it reattached. We added Hydrangea and Hosta off the patio after cleaning the beds up a bit. In their far back yard about 30 feet from the home, we went on a search and destroy mission, pulling out a bunch of overgrown plants, trees, and bushes.

Our clients no longer have an overgrown, 1980s landscape that took over their home. Through removal of old and installation of upgraded new, their home now has curb appeal that will last a long time for these seasoned gardeners.
