Refreshing a 40-Year-Old Landscape Design

landscape design

Our clients had been in their Noblesville home for over 40 years. As handy people, they’d been able to make their landscape design last much longer than most homes that age. However, it was time to give in. They hired our friend, Garry Warren from Greensketch Concepts, to design an updated space. Gary brought us in for the installation.

The existing concrete patio with garden area, fence panels and landscaping like large river birches, needed to be torn out to create a clean slate. The small patio had cracked and had no access from the front driveway. The goal was to create a larger area to accommodate their grandchildren and outdoor entertaining, as well as add connections between multiple entries and exits.

Our clients wanted to be able to place two 6-person tables on the patio plus have space for grilling. So, we installed a new paver patio twice the size of the previous design. We used large format Ozark pavers in a Storm color with ½ mark Charcoal pavers as a border. We also added a sidewalk to connect the space to the driveway using used Oxford non-tumbled Hampton pavers and the Charcoal border. We switched up the pavers for the sidewalk because the large format design does not lend itself well to a narrow and long design – the pattern gets very busy. The Hampton blended well with the Ozark and was tied together with the Charcoal border.

The design also called for a free-standing 12×12 deck adjacent to the patio, where the handy homeowner will build a pergola. To ensure the addition would hold, we built the deck with reinforced corners and attachment points.

An area between the new sidewalk and the house was designated for a new container garden. Our clients purchased large 3 x 5 trough planters which were placed at standing height to make gardening easier. We leveled the ground and added an ebony stone blend to keep the area maintenance-free -except for the vegetables of course!

The landscaping touches consisted of a general plant palette: hydrangea, Japanese maple, and perennials with a focus on adding summer color. Now our clients have a functional, larger outdoor space to gather their family and friends.
