Project Highlight: Landscaping Refresh

A landscaping refresh means rethinking the existing plantings, possibly moving them but definitely adding to them. We refer to this process as embellishment – reconfiguring and adding to a landscape design to make the most of the space. Our clients already had a striking back yard, with a large upper deck and a lower patio area all overlooking a gorgeous golf course. However, they felt it was time to upgrade from the landscaping that was installed when they built the house. The homeowners hired our partner, Green Sketch Concepts, who designed a landscaping refresh for them and then asked us to install it.

The goal was to make the back yard even more user-friendly while enhancing the golf course view. We also had to solve some drainage issues. The home had a walk-out basement, which meant there was a slope from the front of the house to the back. The change in elevation was resulting in some drainage issues, so the first thing we did was build two small retaining walls on either side of the house to keep the existing landscaping beds from washing out. We also redirected some downspouts to ensure the water flowed without creating damage. In one of these beds, we added some new arborvitae for screening.

Next, we addressed the fun stuff. For the main back yard bed, key evergreens already existed for winter interest, so we were looking to enhance the ambiance during the golf season – mid-spring to late fall. We expanded the beds to make room for new plants that would enhance the visual expanse of the golf course and add color throughout the blooming periods. We also relocated some plants that had been placed incorrectly by the previous landscapers.

A small water feature off the patio was also included in the landscape design, which would add the soothing sound of water to the space. We sent our clients to the rock yard to choose a specimen, and they came out with a gorgeous piece – large, weathered limestone with white veining and two existing borings. We crafted the water feature to suit the rock, splitting the feeds from the recirculating pump into the two borings so water would run down both sides. Our clients now have both visual and audio interest from this one aspect of their landscaping refresh.

Finally, we altered a small existing bed with an evergreen tree into another viewing area. We expanded the bed and added a stone bench to provide, quiet contemplation of players’ golf shots. It also invites visitors to walk in the yard, expanding the enjoyment of the outdoor space.

A landscaping refresh makes the most of what exists while adding new interest and enjoyment. Do you feel you can get a lot more out of your backyard? Send us an email or give us a call at 317-339-7847.
