Creating well-designed spaces for outside entertaining has been in big demand over the past decade. For this project, our clients already had an existing deck, but it was not serving their needs or aesthetic. They asked us to create a contemporary deck and patio that reflected the way they live and their style.
The contemporary look was achieved through our design and material choices. Often our goal is to create soft edges and curves in an outdoor space since that is how nature grows. In this case, we created a rectilinear design to offer a more modern look. We expanded the deck matching the existing treated lumber and resurfaced the whole space to ensure it looked uniform. We then added cedar handrails with ½” tubular metal balusters. This design not only added to the contemporary style, it offered those relaxing on the deck a less obstructed view of the yard. Installation of the metal balusters is an exacting process with little room for error. Our clients felt the extra time and expertise were worth it!
We also designed and installed a new patio off the deck. The Concourse style pavers supported the contemporary look and the rectilinear shape of the patio. We added a seating wall made out of Reading Rock Bedford stone that increased the functionality of the patio and also helped define it from the landscaping. Finally, we designed and installed a custom rectangular firepit made out of the Bedford stone. At the time, firepit kits came in circles only. The contemporary look needed a contemporary shape, and we were happy to oblige. Custom also meant they could have any size they wanted. The end result was an outdoor space that looked like a whole separate room.
The backyard was narrow, so we built the new deck and patio along the backside of the home. This oriented the view from the space toward where the children and dog would be playing. It also meant there was little privacy from the neighbors. To complete the project, we added plantings between the new space and the neighbors on both the deck side and patio side. We moved some existing Arborvitae and added more to provide year-long privacy. Most tall narrow evergreens are not suited to our climate, so Arborvitae was our best choice. We also added spring color through Spirea and Dwarf Lilac.
Creating a custom design can be truly enjoyable for the homeowners, but it may not transfer well if they have to move in a few years. Unfortunately, these clients had to move a couple of years later, however, we heard the upgraded space helped sell the home. One of the first questions we always ask a client is how long they expect to live in their home. Our goal is to design for both their short and long-term needs. In this case, our clients were cognizant of the potential for a move, so resale played a significant role in our decision-making. They balanced creating a space they loved with return on investment.
We truly enjoyed designing a contemporary deck and patio space, which was a bit of a departure from what most of our Indiana clients are looking for. If you are considering creating a contemporary deck and patio, send us an email or give us a call at (317) 997-4803.
