Project Highlight: A Gorgeous New Outdoor Living Space

outdoor Living

While we really do love all of our projects, there are a few that stand out for their end result or for how much we enjoyed it. This outdoor living project had both. Our clients were not only so fun to work with, we also ended up building a fantastic backyard space.

An existing deck off the back of their home was no longer fitting our clients’ needs. We expanded the footprint, and replaced it with Trek, a composite decking material that lasts a long time with minimal maintenance.

A step down off the deck was an existing patio, which we redesigned. Unfortunately, we were not able to reuse the pavers which were in good shape but were 20 years old so could not be matched. Instead, we installed a large format paver called Boardwalk in a mix of sizes. The blocks look like Bluestone but are made by pouring the concrete under compression, allowing them to offer a more robust and stain resistant material than standard poured concrete.

Our clients wanted an outdoor fireplace at one end of the patio that would serve two purposes – enjoying an outdoor fire and privacy. We placed the fireplace to interrupt the line of site to the new patio and deck, and then build a wood box on either side to give it a wider profile. The design not only provides the privacy they wanted, but it also does not look like an exclamation point at the end of the patio!

The patio also received some seating walls made out of the same Bedford stone, and we designed a special spot for the grill. Finally, we placed underlighting on the seating wall and up-lights for the fireplace. We sized the lighting system so it can grow – our clients are already planning the next phase of their outdoor living project – a walkway from the patio to the front of their home. We really enjoy projects that have us doing a bunch of different things – a deck, a patio, a fireplace, lighting. And those projects are even better when the clients are fun to work with. We are looking forward to the next phase of their landscape design – and to working with you – more fun people! Send us an email or give us a call at (317) 997-4803 to make an appointment
