Many of our clients come to us after years of dreaming about creating their perfect landscape design. These homeowners had many areas they wanted to spruce up, so after talking with them we came up with a multiple-phase process that respected their readiness and budget. Timing has become even more of a factor these days with the difficulties in obtaining materials. Fortunately, the homeowners were happy to have us tackle one space at a time so we could plan for these delays.
Landscape Design for Curb Appeal
The first phase focused on the front yard, touching up extensive landscaping. We also added a stone walkway from the front of the home along the left side of the house.
Backyard Usability
The second phase focused on updating the useability and safety of the backyard. A timber wall at the back end of their property was disintegrating, making the fence that sat upon it unsafe for their neighbor’s children. We do not install many timber walls anymore, but the accessibility of the space made a modular wall a difficult option. We tore out and rebuilt both the wall and fence, reusing most of the fence panels since they were still in very good shape. The structure should last another 20-30 years!
An existing concrete pool deck was not providing enough space for enjoying the backyard outside of the pool. We wrapped a new patio around one end of the concrete using a traditional 4 x 8 brick which lent itself well to the space and shape. The backyard has a very natural feel, so the curvaceous design complemented the area.
The vegetation in the backyard was completely overgrown, so not only did we add new landscaping around the patio, but we also cleared out a lot of the existing foliage. Our clients love landscape art (right up our alley) so we created room for those pieces to shine. We also added some Hosta, Red Bud trees and other plants. To help contain the landscape beds, we installed aluminum edging, a material we have not used in a while but seems to be making a comeback in 2021. Plus it worked perfectly in this space. We also added a stone path for meandering through the space, as well as a bench and some contrasting rocks to help keep maintenance down and serve as focal points.
Our clients had a stone bridge in their front yard that they loved so much they moved it to the back, but it was not being used well. We turned it into a tribute to a fairy garden! It was not useable as a bridge, but it would make a great focal point. I decided to put a dry creek bed under it which helps drain water during the rainy season. Ferns, Astilbe and a pea gravel bed complete the design. I had so much fun making this space!
Landscape Repair
The final phase of this project occurred after the installation of a new driveway. Our clients had us repair landscape lighting and irrigation that had been damaged. We also touched up some landscaping.
We completed all the projects over six months, working with our client’s schedule and needs. And, rather than a tangled jungle and a leaning fence, they now have a beautiful natural setting with interesting art and more space to sit, meander and enjoy their back yard.
