Project Highlight: A Beautiful Curved Patio With a Cautionary Tale

We see few straight edges in nature. But there is a reason many are found in hardscape designs – rectangles are easier and less expensive to make than curves. We have talked about patio circle kits in previous blog posts, but building a curved patio is still no easy feat. We are not daunted though, especially since we live our tag line: “Bring out the natural beauty of your backyard.” The addition of the curved patio shown above completely changed the look and feel of our clients’ outdoor space.

Our design partner, Gary Warren of Greensketch Concepts, designed our clients’ new backyard and we were hired to install it. The goal was to remove the annoying maintenance required by a wood deck and create a relaxing space to entertain and enjoy their outdoor space. We started by removing the existing rectilinear wood deck that had seen better days. Next, we created an Allen Block retaining wall and installed a new raised paver patio. The paver material does not come in curved designs, so each piece had to be precisely cut. Here is where experience is key – the cuts need to be smooth and nest well together, requiring expertise and time. Hence the higher cost of a curved design compared to a square or rectangle.

Between the patio and the retaining wall we added a planting bed, to both extend the visual look of the hardscape and to provide opportunities for softscape. We added boxwood, spirea, various perennials, hydrangea and service berry.

Now our clients will be able to enjoy their outdoor space without all the maintenance. Homeowners can expect a 30-year life space for pavers that are installed well and not undermined by our Indiana burrowing critters!

Another part of this project provides a cautionary tale. Our client received verbal approval to have a hard-screened area for their raised bed gardens to help keep the deer and rabbits out. We built a lovely low picket fence and pergola that suited the architecture of the home and installed several raised beds. Before our clients had the chance to paint the wood white, the homeowners’ association objected to the project. Since our client did not have written approval, we had to remove the fence and pergola. All of that work and expense for nothing! We installed taller boxwoods to help with the screening, but which did nothing to discourage the critters. The lesson? Get all HOA approvals in writing.

Regardless of whether your desired aesthetic involves curves or straight lines, we would welcome the opportunity to help you enhance the natural beauty of your backyard. Send us an email or give us a call at (317) 997-4803 to set up a free consultation.
