It has been a week of survival!  Between hectic schedules and hellish temperatures we have had all we can do to keep up and endure!  Times like these make one thankful for good friends, family and clients to help push you through.  Loving what you do helps get a person out of bed as well!  This week I have a plant that does great under the pressures of heat, drought and about any other detrimental conditions thrown at it!  Let’s get down to business and discuss the Yarrow.

Sometimes our landscapes resemble an arid desert more than a lush garden, and many of us flat do not have the time to water frequently or amend landscape beds for flowers.  Enter the Yarrow, or Achillea millefolium, a plant that does wonderfully for those of us that like to test our plants durability.  The Yarrow will tolerate droughts, low soil fertility and the intense summer sun.  They will NOT however tolerate wet soil.  Sporting many bloom colors including, red, yellow and white the Yarrows flat flower cluster is beautiful and long lasting.  Blooming from summer into fall you will gain color for nearly the entire growing season.  Use these in a perennial border, rock garden or meadow, but beware!  Yarrow are rabid spreaders and can become a bit of a nuisance if allowed to grow freely.   In addition to their beauty and tenacity, the Yarrow attracts butterflies and is great as a cut flower.
