Would you believe me if I told you its simple? It is and this weeks Plant of the Week will be a simple overview of how I take care of Orchids and get them to re-bloom and thrive!
Why You Should Use Orchids in Your Interior Landscape
The primary reason for using Orchids are their flowers. Unique, varied and stunning an Orchid’s blooms are some of the most delicate and eye catching you will ever find. Though they may look delicate, they are surprisingly resilient and tough little buggers. Not all Orchids are perfect for your indoor landscaping practices, but given the incredibly wide array of Orchid varieties to choose from it is easy to find one that will be able to live in your home. Some can even grow outside here in Indiana!!! Who knew?!
Where to Use Orchids in Your Landscaping and Home
Using Orchids to bring life and color to your home is extremely simple. Step one: Buy the Orchid. Step two: Place Orchid in a spot in need of color. Step three: Enjoy the life and vibrancy you have brought to your home. Honestly, your home is an extension of you as a person. Let your inner landscape guru be creative and place Orchids where you feel it will be enjoyed the most! As far as outside your home goes, make sure you first have a variety of Orchid that will survive here in Indiana. The nicely potted varieties you find at Lowes will not do. Lady Slippers are probably the most commonly seen Orchids in the Hoosier state and can be found at most nurseries! Plant them in a wooded area and allow them to naturalize around your landscape!
How to Make Your Orchids Happy in Your Interior Landscape
Caring for you Orchid is easier than legend will tell you. The myth many, including myself, have bought for years is that Orchids are nearly impossible to get to survive and re-bloom. How then do you make your Orchid flourish? Place your Orchid near a window with at least 6 hours of sun, a little more or less is okay. Water about once a week, letting the growing media dry between waterings. Grow your Orchids in bark, rather than soil, as the regular planting mixes will cause root rot! Fertilization and higher humidity will also help to make your Orchid thrive rather than just survive! Orchid fertilizer and growing media can be easily found at about any big box garden supply store anymore. It’s truly that simple!

I have really grown(puny) to love and enjoy growing Orchids in my home. I had issues getting Orchids to thrive in years past, but have since realized my incorrect growing practices and that I was being an over attentive mother hen. The long lasting blooms are wonderful to have around the house and provide my rather dark home(I miss you bright windows) a burst of light and color!
