My favorite time of the month is back with another wildly interesting plant of the week segment!  This weeks plant of the week is a little…off putting in appearance, but don’t let that deter you from reading about it!  Found in Scotland as well as the in areas of Northern Europe and America, it is a rare beauty to find.  Let’s get into the details and discuss Hydnellum peckii, or the Devil’s Tooth!
Despite its rather murder-scene-like appearance this particular fungus is edible. Â In fact, it’s in the name! Â Hydnellum is derived from the ancient Greek word meaning edible mushroom. Â Though the red “blood” is supposedly quite bitter and it is small, so you probably will not be ordering this at any restaurants. Â Growing in different shapes and colors, there are features to look for when identifying. Â Its fruiting bodies have pink tones and young caps adorn the red liquid on their white skin. Â This fungus is found only in coniferous woodland areas and almost exclusively with pine trees in late summer or fall.
