Plant of the Week – Using Gerbera Daisies in Your Landscaping

Gerbera Daisy Double

The holiday season is upon us, and with it landscapes are illuminated with millions of lights and decorations. The holidays have an infectious feeling that seeps into all of us, leading to weeks of merriment and fun. I love the holiday season and the feeling surrounding it, yes, even more than landscaping. However, discovering new plants for you to consider for the New Year is something that can not be overlooked! This week we discover an annual nearly as bright and cheerful as Father Christmas himself, the Gerbera Daisy.

Why Use Gerbera Daisies in Your Landscaping?

The bright and merry flowers are the reason for the season with this annual. Flowers come in a variety of colors including pink, yellow and white and will pop out of you landscaping like Charlie in the Box from Rudolph. There are a number of flower shapes and sizes as well. I think the double blooms are especially stunning additions to a home! Usually used in pots, the Gerbera Daisy makes a quick easy way to bring stunning color to your landscaping. The biggest maintenance concern is to not let this plant dry out! They are quick to wilt during drought periods and blooms last much longer when watered regularly. Otherwise, you get easy continuous color all season long!

Where to Use Gerbera Daisies in Your Landscaping?

The most typical application for the Gerbera Daisy is to pot it and use it as temporary color in a space. A window box is a wonderful way to display a variety of color and draw the eye of everyone passing by your home. Mix and match colors and shapes together to create a collage of color you can enjoy! The daisy is perfect to use around a sun drenched patio as well to liven up the outdoor living space. Gerbera Daisies can be used within the planting beds as well. Add them to a perennial boarder or tuck them into a boulder wall to soften and brighten the area. Just make sure you plant it in well draining soil and provide it with full sun!

What Does Eagleson Landscape Co. Think?

Gerbera Daisy in the LandscapeLet’s cut to the chase and start with the grade, a B-. Gerbera Daisies are a beautiful annual, but they are finicky. Needing water nearly daily during the drier parts of the year, as well as being susceptible to a number of diseases and insects are the two major negatives surrounding this plant. However, if you are willing to take a little bit of time each day to care for your Daisy you will be rewarded with a bounty of color. Read more about this plant here and enjoy the holiday season!
