Japan is a beautiful country with a sprawling landscape filled with some of the most beautiful scenes I have ever had the pleasure to witness. I can NOT wait to return someday and explore more of what Japan has to offer….and see Katie again. I will make sure to make a blog post in the coming weeks to explore some of the landscape practices and views I saw over seas! However, we need to discuss a plant for this week and I have found a great shrub to discuss! This weeks Plant of the Week is the Doublefile Viburnum.
Why Use Doublefile Viburnum in Your Landscaping
Originating from China and Japan the Doublefile Viburnum will add horizontal form to your landscaping. It grows up to 10 feet by 15 feet, but can be pruned to stay a smaller size. Spring time loads the Viburnums branches with white lacy flowers. This Spring time bloom will make any landscape burst to life, adding both color and form to the area. The Fall then brings bright red berries, which turn black and attract birds. Viburnum as a whole are known to be some of the easiest shrubs to maintain only needing full sun and persistent watering when first planted. (Though watering your plants should continue!)
Where to Use Doublefile Viburnum in Your Landscaping
Viburnum are wonderful shrubs to use as a screen, especially the Doublefile Viburnum due to its abundance of flowers. However, the Doublefile Viburnum can also be used along a homes foundation (When given space to grow and properly maintained) and can be used as a stand alone plant in a landscape bed. Its horizontal growth habit is both unique and beautiful and acts as a wonderful piece in landscape.
