It is no secret, that in addition to landscaping, I adore tropical indoor plants. Working with the flora of Indiana day in day out makes a tropical change of scenery a refreshing change of pace. I enjoy my indoor plants so much, I would call myself an interior garden hobbyist, aka a HUGE DORK. However, incorporating some of my indoor species into the landscaping around my house makes for some beautiful and unique looks. Its not everyday you see bouganvillea, cereus cactus or this weeks Plant of the Week Dahlia in the Hoosier landsc1ape.  Let’s discuss one of the easier tropical plants to incorporate into your landscape, Dahlia!

Why Use Dahlia in Your Landscaping?

Dahlia come in thousands of different shapes, sizes and colors making them fun to collect. Their primary allure is certainly their blooms, which can range in size from 2 inches to nearly a foot in diameter and come in many colors. Dahlias have a color palate that ranges from yellow to pink and about anything in between. This variety makes for an exciting way to splash color throughout a patio space! Dahlia can also grow in a wide range of sizes. Some are as small as 12 inches, while others can reach heights of 8 feet! The incredible variety frequently causes a “terrible” habit to form. You will start with one Dahlia and end with a dozen! Care is easy only requiring space in your home during the winter and water throughout the year. Where to Use Dahlia in your Landscaping?

Dahlia can be used anywhere full sun is present. You can plant these in your garden beds, but I would advise against this as you will be forced to dig them up each year to keep inside. The perfect application for Dahlia is on a patio where you and your guests can get up close and notice the individuality of each Dahlia on display. Place your potted Dahlia on multiple levels and use a variety of sizes to create a summer time display pleasing to the eye.

Well, I am certainly biased due to my infatuation with indoor tropical plants. I will keep this professional though. I think Dahlia, above many other tropical options, are a great way to add color and fun to a space. I will grade Dahlia as a B.  I have to dock a letter grade due to the added needs required to utilize this plant in the Hoosier landscape.  A true beauty, Dahlia are a great way to feel involved and hands on in your landscape.
