The weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful. Since there is no place to go, let it rain let it rain let it…wait. Well the odd winter weather certainly is showing no signs of stopping! I hope you all have stayed dry and warm this crazy holiday season! The New Year is right around the corner (Holy Cow, the New Year is right around the corner?!) and I am ready to tackle 2016. Let’s talk about a new fabulous plant you can add to your garden in 2016. This weeks Plant of the Week is Liatris spicata or Gayfeather.

This full sun perennial brings a unique sort of flair to a landscape. Its finger like stalks stretch out from a finely textured foliage and burst with colors of pink or white. These strong flower spikes make for great cut flowers or can add compact mid range height to an area. Blooming in mid summer to early fall, Gayfeather is wonderful perennial to bring late season color to an area of your yard. Native to wetlands and marshes, this plant is a bit less drought tolerant than some. Do not let that deter you, Gayfeather can handle dry periods without much hassle from the homeowner.
