Summer has been a busy time at Eagleson Meadows. Beyond all the exciting landscaping projects we are involved in and the blooms at the Flower Farm, we have had plenty of visitors to our gardens and plan for even more. Here are some of the highlights:
In June we hosted the Garden Club Ladies from North Harbor, a neighborhood on Morse Lake. One of their members is also involved in the Hosta Society and had visited our gardens last year. She knew the Club would learn a lot from a tour, we set up an event just for them. While we offered a 90-minute guided experience, many visitors got distracted by a particular bed or plant and ended up wandering on their own – something we love to see!
The group asked great questions, especially about our many unusual plants. Our conifers and ginkgo trees are all the product of sport hunting. In the plant world, sports come from a branch on a parent tree that decided to be different. There are sport hunting enthusiasts who go out into conifer forests to find them. The sport is cut from the parent tree and grafted to root stock to form a new plant. This process is where a lot of cool conifers come from, and it was fun to teach other plant nerds about it. Fun fact: ginkgoes are considered conifers.
We also fielded many questions about our plant varieties, such as how fast they grow, how big they get, needed care etc. We love hosting plant lovers of any level – sharing the joy of gardening is one of our greatest pleasures. If you have a group that you feel would enjoy a tour, reach out to us.
